Coffee is Healthy For You.

Article by Chris Weaver

If you are looking for a drug that will lower your risk of developing diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and colon cancer, than continue reading this article. If you are looking for a drug that could lift your mood and help headaches, keep reading this article. If you are looking for a drug that could protect against cavities, keep on reading.

The good news is, this drug is easily accessible and is legal! It is coffee! Yes coffee, the much maligned and beloved beverage. Coffee recently made headlines across North America for possibly cutting the risk of the latest disease epidemic, type 2 diabetes. The real news seems to be that the more you drink, the better it is for you!

Reduces Disease Risk

Harvard researchers studied 126,000 people for as long as 18 years. The researchers calculate that compared to not drinking coffee, downing one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. But if you drink six cups or more each day, the risk for men is slashed by 54% and for women it is cut by 30% over java avoiders.

Although scientists advise that “more research is needed” before they can recommend you do overtime at Starbucks to avoid developing diabetes, the finding are very similar to those in a less- publicized study by Dutch scientists And perhaps more importantly it’s the latest of hundreds of studies suggesting that coffee may be something of a health food- especially in high amounts.

There have been some 19.000 studies in recent decades examining coffee’s impact on heath. And for the most part, the results are as pleasing as a gulp of freshly brewed Breakfast Blend such as the one that is offered at My Coffee Gourmet. For the 108 million Americans who routinely enjoy this traditionally morning –

and increasingly daylong–ritual. To sum it up in practical terms, regular coffee drinkers include the majority of U.S. adults and a growing number of children.

Thomas DePaulis, PHD, a research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies says, “Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful.” The institute conducts its own research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. “For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good.”

Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson’s, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

Drinking coffee regularly even offsets some of the damage causes by other vices, some research indicates. “People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don’t,” says DePaulis.

Some evidence also suggests that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication if unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood and even help prevent cavities.

What causes the coffee to benefit your health?

Is it the caffeine in the coffee? The oodles of antioxidants in coffee beans, some of which become especially potent during the roasting process? Even the mysterious properties that warrant this intensive study?

The answer is yes to all of these.

Some of the health benefits of coffee are a direct result of its higher caffeine content: An eight ounce cup of drip brewed coffee contains about 85 mg–about three and half times more than the same serving of tea or cola or one ounce of chocolate.

DePaulis recently said that the evidence is very strong that regular coffee consumption reduces risk of Parkinson’s disease and for that; it’s directly related to the caffeine in coffee. In fact, Parkinson’s drugs that are now being developed contain a derivative of caffeine based on this evidence.

Coffee is a Performance Enhancer

It’s also caffeine–and not coffee, per se–that makes java a powerful aid in enhancing athletic endurance and performance, says physiologist and longtime coffee researcher Terry Graham, PhD, of the University of Guelph in Canada. So powerful, that until recently, caffeine in coffee or other forms was deemed a “controlled” substance by the Olympic Games Committee, meaning that I could only in small, designated amounts by competing athletes.

“What caffeine likely does is stimulate the brain and nervous system to do things differently,” he says. “That may include signaling you to ignore fatigue or recruit extra units of muscle themselves, causing them to produce a stronger contraction. But what’s amazing about it is that unlike some performance enhancing manipulation some athletes do that are specific for strength or sprinting or endurance, studies show that caffeine positively enhances all of these things.”

Simply put, if you consume enough caffeine- whether from coffee or another source- and you will likely run faster, last longer and be stronger. What is enough? As little as one cup can offer some benefit, but the real impact comes from at lease two mugs, says Graham. By comparison, it would take at least eight glasses of cola to get the same effect, which would not be good if running say a marathon.

The harder you work the more benefit you would receive from the caffeine. “Unfortunately, where you see the enhancing effects from caffeine is in hard-working athletes, who are able to work longer and somewhat harder,” says Graham, who has studied the effects of caffeine and coffee for nearly two decades. “I you are a recreational athlete who is working out to reduce weight or just feel better, you are not pushing yourself hard enough to get an athletic benefit from coffee or other caffeinated products.

That may explain why in that new study at Harvard, those drinking decaf coffee but not tea beverages also showed a reduced diabetes risk, though it was half as much as those drinking coffee.

Gourmet Coffee—Not Just For The Rich And Famous

Article by M. Xavier

You wake up to the smell of coffee brewing–but can you tell if it is gourmet coffee?

Gourmet coffees, which like fine wine were once a symbol of prestige, are now sold everywhere–fine coffee houses, grocery stores and retail discounts stores. Franchises have been built around the sale of gourmet coffee in the past 20 years and many will allow you to order your cup of gourmet coffee through a drive-thru window.

What caused the increase in popularity of gourmet coffees? Did everyone just decide they need a dash of mint, a hint of vanilla or an ounce of caramel? It is unlikely that the rise in gourmet coffee sales was due only to a change in our taste in coffee.

Marketing and a good product is most likely the reason for the increase in gourmet coffee sales in the past 20 years. It is fashionable to walk around with a coffee cup sipping on the latest gourmet coffee sold at the trendy coffee house.

Many people are introduced to gourmet coffees when they receive a gift set at Christmas or for a special occasion. These gift sets may included a variety of flavored gourmet coffees such as almond, chocolate and Irish cream. The gourmet coffee is often placed in a designer mug that you will most use when you drink your gourmet coffee after it is brewed.

Many convenience stores offer flavored coffees that are marketed as gourmet coffees, along with espresso and cappuccino. While these coffees may taste like they are gourmet, they are usually derived from coffee grounds found on grocery store shelves.

That’s because the real secret to gourmet coffee is not in the flavor, but in the type of coffee bean. Gourmet coffee is composed of Arabica beans, while most canned coffees are made from robusta beans. These Arabica beans will grow in mainly sub-tropical regions. Good weather is important to the growth of these gourmet coffee beans.

Gourmet coffee is often identified by its name and that name can come from a variety of derivatives, include the region where the bean is grown. You may want a cup of Colombian gourmet coffee. This type of gourmet coffee gets its name from the country where it is grown.

But another type of gourmet coffee, French Roast, has nothing to do with France but with how the bean is roasted.

Gourmet coffee has found its way to grocery stores in recent years and you can find a variety of inexpensive gourmet coffees to try at home. Many of the packaged gourmet coffees are paired with a hint of flavor. Favorite gourmet coffee flavors include vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, peppermint, chocolate mine, Irish Cream and caramel to name a few.

Some people like to add more than just cream and sugar to their gourmet coffee. Whipped cream, chocolate chips and fruit juices are popular additions to gourmet coffees.

So when you wake it to your morning cup of java, why not make a cup of gourmet coffee? Try exotic gourmet coffee flavors and add more than cream and sugar. You may find yourself addicted to gourmet coffee.

Guide To Coffee Grinder

Article by Masni Rizal Mansor

The coffee grinder has been around almost as long as humans have been drinking coffee. When the coffee bean was first discovered in the Middle East, it was dried, boiled in water and then the coffee lover would drink the broth and eat the berries. Once humans became a little more sophisticated in their coffee drinking, the beans were dried then pounded into bits and then brewed. Soon humans grasped the idea of roasting the coffee beans and then pulverizing them in a coffee grinder to make even better coffee.

A Necessity When You Want Coffee

Once coffee became a commercial adventure and manufacturers began making coffee to be sold, it was often pre-ground before being canned, sealed and sold. This type of coffee is probably the most widely available, but for many the aroma and flavor of your everyday run of the mill coffee leaves something to be desired. That is partly the reason that gourmet coffee has become such a big business in the last few years.

Consumers began to realize that to make a better cup of coffee; you needed a better quality of coffee beans. Many grocery stores today sell a variety of coffees as whole beans. Usually once you choose the variety of coffee you want, there is a coffee grinder right there by the coffee to pulverize your beans. Since there is no lag time between purchasing the beans, using the coffee grinder and brewing the coffee, the quality of the coffee itself will be better. With commercial coffee, there is usually about a three week delay before the cans of coffee are bought by a consumer. By that time, quite often the coffee will start to be stale and start to develop a bitter taste.

These days the world is even better for coffee lovers since there are a variety of coffee grinders available for home use. These small coffee grinders aren’t large like coffee shop coffee grinders, but they get the job done just fine. This enables the coffee lover to buy whole beans at the store and only grind the amount needed for their morning coffee every day.

Coffee grinders help coffee lovers achieve a fresher taste and quality to their morning coffee. For most coffee aficionados, having an entire coffee making setup at home will include a coffee grinder as well as the required equipment such as a coffee maker. If you are a coffee lover, having a coffee grinder at home can mean the difference between a super fresh cup of coffee and an average one.

The Coffee Mug – Just A Cup Or A Statement?

Article by M. Jedediah

Just one day after the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears made it to Super Bowl XLI, a coffee mug featuring the teams appeared on an Internet auction site.

A coffee mug can come in every color, in different shapes and covered in clever statements, advertisements or promotions such as the one for Super Bowl XLI.

A coffee mug’s function is to hold a hot beverage, such as coffee or tea. Usually made of ceramic, a coffee mug will have a handle to protect your hands from the heat radiating from the beverage. But walk through any large office and you will see more than just a coffee mug with a handle.

A coffee mug may have a funny statement such as “I don’t do mornings” or “Ask me after I’ve had my morning coffee.”

A coffee mug may be in the shape of an animated character. A Disney-themed coffee mug is a popular item on Internet auction sites.

The shape of a coffee mug may reflect your hobby. A popular coffee mug among men is shaped in the form of a golf bag. Another popular coffee mug is shaped like a fish.

A coffee mug is a popular gift at Christmas and on special occasions. A coffee mug may be part of a gift set. These gift sets may also include gourmet coffees inside the coffee mug.

Advertisers have also recognized the value of having their product name or service printed on a coffee mug. Most specialty advertising firms will offer a coffee mug along with T-shirts, pens and hats. Coffee mugs have advertised everything from restaurants, bars, schools, non-profit agencies and employment services to name a few.

The coffee mug has also played role in politics as many candidates will hand out as many coffee mugs as they will flyers or T-shirts while they are campaigning for office.

A coffee mug that features vintage advertising such as the Campbell Soup coffee mugs sell well on Internet auction sites. That is because many people collect coffee mugs around a certain theme, whether it is a soup company or animated character.

A family’s fine china collection almost always includes a coffee mug. The coffee mug will have the china pattern imprinted on the mug. This coffee mug is often a smaller cup than those purchased in gift sets. A coffee mug designed with a fine china pattern is also a collector’s item.

You can find a coffee mug at nearly every souvenir shop. Some of these coffee mugs will have a person’s name screen-printed onto the cup. Another coffee mug may state the name of the city or state where the mug was purchased. Many people collect coffee mugs from the places they have visited.

Many people need a coffee mug that is less personal and more practical. A travel mug is well-insulated, keeping beverages warm for hours. This type of coffee mug will have a tightly-fitting cap with an opening on top. Most travel mugs fit into a vehicle cup-holder.

It is up to you to decide if you want a practical or personal coffee mug.

Choosing A Coffee Maker – Tips On Finding The Right Features

Article by Sharon Chennault

Choosing a good coffee maker is not a decision to be taken for granted. If you are going to spend money on your favorite coffee, you will want to make sure the coffee maker you choose is of good quality and has the features you want. The majority of coffee makers are generally quite good and you will notice no difference in the taste of your coffee from one brand to another. There are some basic features to look for when choosing a coffee maker and some luxury features that may give you a better tasting cup of coffee The first decision you must make in choosing a coffee maker is what type of filter you would prefer. You can choose a basket type filter or a cone shaped filter, the difference in the two being different contact times between the coffee grounds and the water. A basket type filter seems to provide a longer contact time between the water and the coffee grounds, so if a basket filter is your preference, make sure you use coffee grounds that are fairly large. Cone type filters are generally less prone to spillage. If you are considering a gold tone filter, it will give your coffee a richer taste, but the upkeep may not be worth the small difference. The color of your coffee maker is not a major concern, but keep in mind that if you choose a color that is pleasing to you, your coffee will seem to taste better. The only real issue involved in the color of your coffee maker is to remember that white stains easily and tends to look old rapidly. A dark color will look new a lot longer than a white coffee maker. Coffee makers with a pot that has a long neck will be harder to clean. If you cannot easily wash the coffee pot with soap and water, your coffee will taste stale over time due to the build up of residue that cannot be cleaned easily. Make sure your entire hand can fit inside the coffee pot to make cleaning easy.Other than the basic features, which include color, filter, ease of cleaning, etc., there are some additional features that you may want to consider. If you don’t mind your coffee grounds being exposed to air overnight, a timer is a wonderful thing to have. Timers will allow you extra time in the mornings and if you choose a coffee maker with an attached grinder, the noise would probably eliminate your need for an alarm clock. A feature that is often overlooked is the shape of the housing around the coffee pot. Many manufacturers are making the housing larger so that the coffee in the pot stays hotter. The housing area in any good coffee maker should cover at least half of the coffee pot, the keep heat in.In general, coffee that is freshly ground tastes better. Grinders that are attached to coffee makers are a bit of a hassle. They make the coffee maker harder to clean and the coffee beans are not always ground uniformly. If you want a coffee maker with an attached grinder, look for a burr grinder rather than a blade grinder. You may also want to look into a coffee maker with a built in water filtration system. Filtered water does tend to make the coffee taste better, but purchasing distilled or purified water can serve the purpose just as well as a built in water filtration system. For the perfect pot of coffee, the water temperature needs to be around 200 degrees Fahrenheit. In general, the less expensive coffee makers do not reach this temperature. Most of the better brand names will advertise the temperature you can expect your coffee to reach while brewing. Choosing the right coffee maker is not easy. Make sure you purchase from well-known manufacturers. You will be able to find replacement parts and will be assured of an acceptable level of quality. Choose a coffee maker that meets your basic needs and any has additional features you desire.

The Bunn Coffee Maker won’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

Article by Eric Comforth

There are many different coffee makers available in the marketplace to choose from. One of them is the Bunn Coffee maker. The Bunn Coffee Maker is made by the Bunn-O-Matic Corporation. The Bunn-O-Matic Corporation was founded in 1957 and they are credited with introducing the first paper coffee filter. Over the years the company has evolved and started making commercial beverage equipment and, more recently, home coffee brewers. There are seven different types of Bunn Coffee brewers available which include; My Café Brewer. My Café Brewer brews one cup of coffee at a time. The Bunn coffee makers take pride in brewing coffee at home that matches the standards of the expensive restaurant cups of coffee. They have a stainless steel tank with an advanced spray head, which dissipates the water over the coffee, and a very effective hot water heater. The coffee machines are either black or white with a stainless steel trunk which allows them to blend with any of the home décor styles. The decanter on most of the machines can hold up to ten cups of perfectly brewed coffee. Bunn also makes the BCG Grinder for pre-grinding your coffee beans.

The Bunn Advantage claims that Bunn Coffee makers brew coffee that is robust in flavor without the common bitterness encountered with some coffee machines. Bunn Coffee makers do this by using a patented system that keeps the temperature at the ideal brewing temperature of 2000 Fahrenheit. The coffee maker has a fast brew cycle which exposes the water to the ground coffee beans for the perfect length of time for a perfect coffee flavor. The Bunn Coffee maker creates the right amount of turbulence via its spray head to suspend the ground coffee and extract it’s flavor uniformly for the perfect cup of coffee.

How to Use a Bunn Coffee Maker

Start with a good quality coffee that has been well stored. The coffee maker requires one tablespoon of ground coffee for one brewed cup. Use good clean odorless water preferably water that has been filtered. If you need to keep your coffee for more than 30 minutes store it in a thermal carafe; it can hold its flavor here for up to 60 minutes. Clean your decanter after every use, even the faintest trace of old coffee can taint your fresh pot.

Bunn Coffee maker replacement parts can easily be obtained from vendors and from the manufacturer. Parts for the Bunn coffee maker are easily accessible. On the companies website you can find access to customer service representatives who can answer your questions and help find the replacement part or accessory that you need. Coffee Maker Types

Article by A. Pruder

When we hear the term ‘coffee maker’ most of us think of only one type of coffee maker. Most often, the drip style coffee maker or the espresso type machine comes to mind, depending on where you live and your taste in coffee. Of course, the choices vary with the region in which people live also.

One type of coffee maker may be frowned upon in certain parts of the world, while being quite acceptable in another location. Some types of coffee makers are quite antiquated by today’s standards, but are still being used by those who prefer the coffee produced.

Such is the case with the percolator style coffee makers. There are two types of percolator style coffee makers, the stove top model and the electric percolator. Both percolators work in the same fashion, which is circulating boiling water r over the coffee grounds and through a metal filter repeatedly. Some argue that this makes a good cup of coffee while others say this style coffee maker makes the worst coffee imaginable. The naysayers exclaim the percolator produces a bitter tasting coffee no matter what brand or grind of coffee you use.

The automatic drip coffee maker is by far the most recognized type of coffee maker. This coffee maker produces coffee by heating water in a reservoir which then travels up into a coffee bin holding a filter with the coffee grounds. Then hot water steeps through the coffee and the filter in the bin and drips into an awaiting pot or carafe. These coffee makers usually have a heating element to keep the brewed coffee reasonably hot until the coffee is gone or it’s time to brew another pot. Some models come with a thermal style carafe which allows the coffee drinker to brew a pot of coffee right into the carafe for coffee on the go.

Automatic drip coffee makers are the most widely used coffee makers by the American consumer. This type of coffee maker also has the versatility to make from one to usually ten cups of coffee at a time. There are also specialized one cup coffee makers which make use of the automatic drip method. The automatic drip coffee maker uses disposable filters, unlike the percolator style coffee makers.

The espresso coffee maker comes in two versions for the consumer, stovetop and electric. The stove top model is of course less expensive than its electric counterpart. Another advantage to the stovetop espresso maker is that it is highly portable, unlike the electric model, which is limited in mobility by its size and need of electricity.

One drawback to the stovetop espresso coffee maker is that it may leave bits of very fine powdery granules. This makes the stovetop espresso coffee maker a device that one must master the techniques of using to get a perfect cup of coffee.

Coffee – The origin of the species

Article by Coffee City

Coffee, along with tea and soft drinks is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The popularity and liking for coffee as a beverage can be gauged by the fact that its consumption is approximately one third of the volume of water consumed in the United States and Europe. The coffee that we drink is actually prepared from seeds, normally referred to as beans, of the coffee plant.

Coffee beans usually grow in pairs in the coffee cherry. In some rare cases, a single bean can also be found growing in the plant. Such single beans are known as pea-berry or carcoli beans. Pea-berry has a more prominent flavor than other Arabica beans are high on demand and are more expensive.

Species and Origins:The Genus, Coffea, to which the coffee plant belongs, contains about 25 species out of which the most prominent are:- The older species Coffea Arabica, was called the Kaffa, originated in Ethiopia. – The newer species, Coffea canephora (Robusta), probably originated in Uganda.- Coffea liberica, which is indigenous to Liberia – Coffea esliaca, that is believed to be indigenous to Sudan

Whereas Coffea Robusta is a shrub type plant, Coffea Arabica grows more like a tree. Some varieties of the coffee plant grow up to 30 feet but for easy picking of the coffee berry they are seldom allowed to grow beyond 15 feet. The coffee plant grows best under the shade of natural vegetation classified as Tropical Semi-deciduous Forest and in warm humid isothermal climate with annual precipitation of 1800-2000 mm and a mean annual temperature of 21-21.9°C

The best soils for coffee plants are deep sandy loam soils with coarse makeup perspective, having good aeration, moderate infiltration, and pH from 5.0 to 6.0. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous are the most important elements though physical conditions can limit growth to a great extent.

Initially, Arabica coffees were named after the ports that they were exported from – for example, Java, from Indonesia and Mocha, from Yemen. Arabica is considered by many to be better in taste than Robusta, but the species is more susceptible to disease and therefore not as profitable to grow. The flavor of the Arabica beans depends upon the region they are grown in. Arabica beans are now grown in three main regions – Latin America, East Africa/Arabia and Asia/Pacific, and have distinctive characteristics of flavor, aroma, body, and acidity levels. Apart from the region, processing, genetic subspecies or varieties of beans also have a great impact on the coffee flavor and taste. For example, washed or wet processed beans tend to be more acidic in taste. Some regions even produce coffee beans that have a citrus-like or earthy flavor and aroma which can be best described as berry-like or flowery.

Robusta coffees are cultivated in environments where Arabica cannot blossom and have approximately 45% more caffeine than Arabica coffees. Robusta has little taste and tends to be bitter and has a typical “burnt rubber” and “wet cardboard” aroma and flavor. Robusta beans are cost effective but their peculiar taste is not liked by a many. To make Robusta beans more palatable and suitable for coffee blends the undesirable flavors are removed through a steaming process. Some espresso blends use good quality Robusta to decrease costs and get a better “crema” or foamy head.

Modern coffee, however, is more origin specific, and is known by country, region, varietals and even the estate it is grown and processed in.

Some coffees are made from particular varietals. Varietal, a botanical term that refers to a taxonomic category rank below species and are not related to origin are more specific than Arabica and Robusta. Coffees made of beans from single varietals are generally referred as such and in certain cases. The name of the region is added for distinctive branding. Rwanda Blue Bourbon is one such example of a coffee made from single varietals and made in Rwanda.

Brazil remains the world’s largest producer and exporter of coffee. In recent years, however, there has been a flood of Robusta beans from Vietnam. The preference of the large industrial houses, multinational roasters and instant coffee producers, for the Robusta variety, due to its cheaper cost, was instrumental in the huge influx, precipitating a crisis of sorts in the prices of coffee the world over.
